A suggested itinerary that will take you through four of England's National
Parks, with some great train rides and heritage visits

Day 1
Drive to Ironbridge in Shropshire, a world heritage site recognised as the birthplace of the Industrial
Revolution. We will visit the Bliss Hill Victorian Village and the preserved iron bridge over the River
Severn in the middle of the small town.
After lunch, ride the Severn Valley railway from Bridgenorth to Kidderminster. This is one of the
largest standard gauge preserved lines in England well known for its big locomotives and well
maintained period stations.
Day 2
Drive through the Peak District National Park. On the way, stop off at the National Tramway
Museum at Crich to ride a period tram through restored streets, and the historic house and estate at
Chatsworth.
Chatsworth offers something for everyone to enjoy, from world famous works of art and spectacular
fountains to elegant shops. The home of the Duke and Duchess of Devonshire is set in the heart
Derbyshire's Peak District National Park, surrounded by one of the most magnificent landscapes in
the country.
Day 3
Explore Haworth, the town made famous by the Bronte family. Visit the Parsonage museum that gives
an insight into the life and literary genius of the famous sisters. Ride on the Keighley and Worth
Valley Railway from Oxenhope to Keighley down a delightful valley.
Day 4
Visit York Minster and take a walk though the narrow streets of the old city before continuing to the
National Railway Museum.
Day 5
Drive to Pickering to ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway to Grosmont. This is one of the
longest standard gauge preserved lines, and it benefits from the scenery of the national park. Continue
by road to the seaside town of Whitby, where Captain Cook grew up.
Day 6
Drive to the Lake District, stopping en-route to ride the Embsay & Bolton Abbey Railway near
Skipton on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales. From here, we will make a detour to see the impressive 24
arch Ribblehead Viaduct that carries the Settle to Carlisle Railway over Batty Moss 105 feet below.
Drive through the Lake District to the northern lakes of Thirlmere and Derwent Water.
Day 7
Ride on the 15 inch gauge Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway. Continue by road over the Hardknott and
Wrynose Passes to Ambleside, from where it is a short ride back to Windermere.
Day 8
Explore the Lake District with a cruise on Lake Windermere, followed by a steam train on the
Lakeside & Haverthwaite Railway. Drive to Appleby, where you will join the famous Settle &
Carlisle railway for a ride to Settle through the Yorkshire Dales.
