The Gran Lujo Train

The El Transcantabrico Gran Lujo train entered service in 2011. It has been created from the El Transcantabrico Classic, which has been
completely refurbished and now boasts panoramic lounges with large windows and luxurious decor.

The suites are twice the size of those on the Classic train. This makes the train more exclusive, with only 14 suites, a maximum of 28 guests.

The coach and touring fit in with the rest of the train, making this a very special journey.
The El Transcantabrico tour includes:

  • Seven nights en-suite compartment accommodation on board the train
  • Seven dinners and eight lunches of typical northern Spanish cuisine, with wine, coffee or tea and
    liqueur included
  • Seven buffet breakfasts on board

There are 28 classic suites on
the train. 26 are double bed
suites (120cm x 185cm), two
have an extra top bunk for
children under 12. Each suite
has a wardrobe, mini bar and
safe. The bathroom has a
shower, wc and wash basin.
All suites are air conditioned.

Getting there

The recommended airport for Leon is
Valladolid. A coach can be booked
from there to Leon, information can
be found on the airport website.
Alternatively you can travel by
RENFE
train.

Santiago has an airport with direct
flights from the UK. The town centre
is a short taxi or bus ride away.

Ryanair fly to both Valladolid and
Santiago. An alternative is to fly with
Iberian, who connect via Madrid to
Leon.

Santiago de Compostela - San Sebastian

First day, Saturday.
12h00. Meet at the reception of the Parador de los Reyes Catolicos of San
Santiago de Compostela, an hotel located in the main Cathedral square.
Lunch in Santiago. In the afternoon, travel by coach to Ferrol to join the train
to Viveiro. Dinner and night in Viveiro.
Second day, Sunday.
Breakfast will be on board the train en-route to Ribadeo, on the boundary
between Galicia and Asturias. There we will visit the Coast of Lugo and
Cathedrals Beach. Lunch will be in Ribadeo. Continue from Ribadeo to
Luarca, the white town on the green coast. Dinner and night in Luarca.
Third day, Monday.
Continue to Oviedo, where we will visit the most remarkable Pre-Romanesque
monuments in Spain. Experience excellent traditional cuisine before
continuing to Gijon, the other great city of Asturias. Lunch in Oviedo. Dinner
and night in Gijon.
Fourth day, Tuesday.
As we continue to Arriondas, we will visit the National Park of Picos de Europa
in the heart of Asturias. Ascend the mountains to the the lakes of Covadonga,
the Sanctuary of Covadonga, and finally Cangas de Onis. This afternoon the
train will continue to Llanes, a wonderful fishing town in eastern Asturias.
Dinner and night in Llanes.
Fifth day, Wednesday.
During breakfast we will enter the Cantabrian region. Travelling along the
gorge of La Hermida we will arrive to the sanctuary of Saint Toribio de
Liebana and then on to Potes. In the afternoon we will go by train to Cabezon
de la Sal. Lunch in Potes. Dinner and night in Cabezon.
Sixth day, Thursday.
This morning, visit Santillana del Mar and the Altamira Museum. Continue to
Santander by train, a peaceful city that combines beauty, fascination and
charm. Lunch in Santillana del Mar. Dinner and night in Santander.
Seventh day, Friday.
The train will travel from Santander and Bilbao where you will visit the
Guggenheim Modern Arts Museum. Lunch on board as we continue to
Balmaseda. Dinner and night in Villasana de Mena.
Eight day, Saturday.
San Sebastian, a fascinating city that will capture your heart with its unusual
attractions, Our city tour will be the end of your journey.
San Sebastian - Santiago de Compostela

First day, Saturday.
Your tour starts with a City tour and lunch in San Sebastián, a fascinating city
that will capture your heart with its unusual attractions. Travel by coach to
Bilbao where the train will be awaiting. Settle onto the train as you travel to
Balmaseda. Dinner in Villasana de Mena.
Second day, Sunday.
The train will travel from Villasana to Bilbao. The City Tour includes a visit to
the Guggenheim Museum. Lunch on board while going to Santander, a calm
city that combines beauty, fascination and charm. Dinner and night in
Santander.
Third day, Monday
The train continues to Unquera. From here, travel by coach along the gorge
of La Hermida, arriving at Potes and the sanctuary of Saint Toribio de
Liébana. Continue this afternoon to Cabezón de la Sal to visit Comillas.
Lunch in Potes and dinner and night in Cabezón de la Sal.
Fourth day, Tuesday.
From Cabezón de la Sal, visit the Neo-cave of Altamira, and Santillana del
Mar, a beautiful Middle-Ages city. Lunch in Santillana. In the afternoon the
train will continue Asturias and the beautiful fishing town of Llanes, afterwards
to Arriondas. Dinner and night in Arriondas.
Fifth day, Wednesday.
We will reach the Heart of Asturias. From Arriondas, travel by coach into The
National Park of Picos de Europa. Ascend to the Lakes of Covadonga, the
sanctuary of covadonga and Cangas de Onís. Lunch on board. Once back on
the train we will continue to Gijón, the second city of Asturias. Dinner and
night in Gijón.
Sixth day, Thursday.
From Gijón to Oviedo, the Capital of the Principality, a city famous for its
cuisine and the most remarkable Pre-Romanesque momuments of Spain. The
tour goes on to to Luarca, the White Town of the Green Coast; Lunch in
Oviedo. Dinner and night in Luarca.
Seventh day, Friday.
Visit Ribadeo, at the mouth of Eo’s River. See Cathedrals’ Beach and the
High estuary of the northern coast of Galicia with its stunning landscape.
Lunch in Ribadeo. In the afternoon we will stop in Viveiro, Dinner and night
in Vivero.
Eighth day, Saturday.
This morning, we will travel from Ferrol to Santiago de Compostela by coach.
The tour ends at mid-day.

The suites on the Gran Lujo have

The train will stop at night, ensuring a

wardrobe, suitcase storage, safe, 2
TV's, a VCR and games console, HiFi

sofa that can be turned into an extra

Questions and answers

Where does the tour end in San Sebastian?
The meeting and tour end point in San Sebastian is at the Maria Cristina Hotel.

Our tour ends in San Sebastian, but we need to get back to Bilbao to catch our flight.
The last part of the tour from Bilbao to San Sebastian is by coach, but there is no luggage storage facility at the Bilbao Station.
The tour ends at San Sebastian at 13h00, before lunch, and there is a train departing from the Amara Station in San Sebastian at 14:47 arriving
to Bilbao (Atxuri Station) at 17:23. The one way trip fare is just 5,00 Euros (These times and prices should be checked as they may change).

Can you suggest a hotel in Bilbao?
The four star Hotel Gran Bilbao is just 500 metres from the station and 12 km from the airport.

We do not speak Spanish. Will we have a problem?
No. The El Transcantabrico tours all have English speaking guides and some other staff members can usually speak English as well. Your
fellow guests will probably be cosmopolitan, but you should not have any difficulty.
