Please go to the South African Steam homepage for more information. Botswana and Zimbabwe are not affected by this cancellation. Go to the South Africa Steam tour page Botswana 30 May to 02 June The industrial 4-8-2's at Selebe Phikwe are always a highlight of an African tour and we are planning to spend two days there in place of the one day visits that have been the norm in recent years. This should give you a great chance to experience one of Africa's last remaining revenue steam operations. An added advantage is that the Selebe Phikwe visit transfers you from Johannesburg to Bulawayo. Go to the Botswana Steam tour page with a full itinerary and prices Zimbabwe 02 to 11 June Zimbabwe's Garratts hardly need an introduction on these pages. We have run nearly 400 tours with them since 1986, and this experience and our good contacts with the railway normally results in tours that run close to what was planned. The 2012 tour will focus on Bulawayo and the Southern Area. Emphasis will be on using all three Garratt types in suitable photographic locations, as well as running with steam all of the way to Victoria Falls. In order to make sure that we do not repeat the 2011 slow running, we will use a diesel electric locomotive as well as steam on most sections, removing the diesel, support wagons and coaches for runpasts. This should give you photographs of Garratt operated goods trains that do not have coaches or water tanks attached. | IMPORTANT In some countries, you may experience laws and standards that might not be the same as you are used to in the UK. We visit countries with less advanced infrastructure, an open yet cautious mind and a flexible approach can help your enjoyment of the experience. By their nature, preserved steam locomotives and older diesel electric locomotives are prone to unexpected failure. Should this occur, we will ask the service supplier to substitute the most appropriate alternative equipment or service consistent with the advertised programme. The railways over which these tours operate are often single track with passing loops, possibly with infrastructure maintained to a lower standard than in the UK. Any delays or cancellations caused by the failure of such plant and machinery beyond the direct control of Geoff's Trains will be dealt with as quickly as possible, but no compensation can be offered for such failure or delay. |
